Meet Nurse Anne
I have been a registered nurse (RN) for over 40 years. My career has been devoted to mothers and babies and their families, in the hospital and at home and in the community. I have done bedside nursing in the hospital for many years. I have also been an instructor for many years for nursing students when they are in the hospital (clinical practicum experiences). I have also worked with public health departments as a community and population health nurse and again, have been an instructor for nursing students during their community health clinical experiences, most of these experiences with children and families. I also have many years of experience teaching in the nursing school classroom and skills labs. My teaching experiences also cover teaching nursing theory, research, epidemiology, statistics, and quality improvement to graduate nursing students.
Women’s Health and Menopause
As a registered nurse (RN), I can listen to you about your experiences with menopause plus pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, contraception, and sex. Other concerns of women’s health such as urinary tract infections, endometriosis, painful periods, menstrual migraines, and others are also topics I might be able to help you with. We can discuss if it might help to see someone who can prescribe medications and treatments for you.
My background includes previous clinical practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) where I gave independent care for women’s health, childbearing, and menopause. I retired from CNM-level practice but still maintain regular access to medical and nursing professional information and work hard to keep my knowledge current. I use this information to help you interpret what doctors have said and to help you plan for doctor visits or for talking to doctors in the future.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)
I try to stay as knowledgeable as possible about complementary and alternative medicine, both the benefits and the cautions. I am happy to discuss other approaches than Western biomedicine. For example, adding sources of soy to your diet in midlife is repeatedly studied to show no reliable help with hot flashes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and clinical hypnosis might help.
Scientific Research
I have worked in nursing research for over 17 years and have graduate degrees (MS in nursing science; MPH or master of public health; PhD in nursing science), all of which required my own independent research. My doctoral dissertation was about depression during the menopausal transition. I derived my own doctoral research from my work for 15 years on a research project studying the menopausal transition.
Academics
I have also taught nursing at all levels, including doctor of nursing practice programs. Because of my academic work, I am familiar with finding up-to-date professional information quickly. I also have become efficient in reading and analyzing original research articles and other professional writing. Charges for finding, reading, and understanding professional information to give to you are at the same rate as for our telephone calls themselves, $1/minute. (see Charges and Payment).
